About Us

Founded in 2012 in Kitchener-Waterloo, Lightning Banjo Productions is a Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) company with a focus on shows that offer something for the entire family. 

Based in the Waterloo Region, our plays have been the first theatrical experience for many young audience members. We want the experience to meet young people on their level, but never speak down to them. Our work recognizes that children are intelligent and deserve to be told intelligent stories that are also entertaining.

Our mandate extends beyond the stage to arts education partnerships, including the KW Art Gallery who has worked to create pre-show art activities tied to the play’s themes. We’ve also had a highly successful partnership with Steckle Heritage Farm, including a sold-out run of Charlotte’s Web performed in the 150 year old barn. We were treated to the surprise appearance of the friendly barn cat, who wove her way through the audience before joining the actors on stage and settling onto the set to watch the show.
